About the Artist:
Leo Russel (1917-1985) was an American artist born in Chicago to Russian emigré parents who encouraged his creative pursuits from a young age. He studied with renowned artists and exhibited an early mastery of various media including painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Russel was heavily influenced by Russian avant-garde art movements as well as American scene painting and social realism.

In New York City during the 1930s, he became part of the burgeoning abstract expressionist circle, exhibiting alongside Pollock, de Kooning, and others. Russel gained further recognition through commissioned works like murals and even a UNICEF exhibition design. His innovative techniques combining technical skill and an experimental modern style foreshadowed later Pop and Op art movements. With a prolific output spanning over 11 solo shows, Russel left behind a rich artistic legacy up until his death in 1985.
